Southeast Asia Spot LNG Demand Higher in Sum23 vs Sum22

LNG

The recent fall in Asian LNG spot prices has prompted an increase in interest from South Asian buyers. Southeast Asian buying interest is likely to increase this summer compared to last year according to Bloomberg.

  • Thailand’s spot LNG demand could lead to import growth this summer from last year. LNG will offer the only source of increased supply for the country due to no upside potential from pipeline supplies and a drop in domestic production by 17% in 2022.
  • India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are all expected to see slightly lower demand in summer 23 compared to summer last year despite the recent increased interest at lower prices. A further reduction in spot prices would likely be required to boost LNG spot consumption according to Bloomberg.
  • The front month JKM price is holding just below 15$/mmbtu having fallen from a high of over 35$/mmbtu in December. Levels are still high compared to prices generally below 10$/mmbtu before mid 2021.
