SPD Continues To Sink In Polls

GERMANY

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrat Party continues to sink in polls as inflation erodes confidence in the government.

  • The SPD is now firmly the third most popular party in the country, falling behind the Greens and a resurgent Christian Democrats.
  • It appears that the economy has now trumped the war in Ukraine as the early period of the Russian invasion saw the CDU, and former Chancellor Angela Merkel, come under scrutiny for developing high levels of energy dependency with Russia.
  • Change since the 2021 election (Politico): CDU/CSU: 28% (+4) Greens: 22% (+7) SPD: 20% (-6)
