SPD Gains In Federal Polls Matched In Berlin Ahead Of Regional Election

GERMANY

The latest opinion polling ahead of the Berlin state regional election (being held on the same day as the federal election on 26 September) shows the gains for the centre-left Social Democrats in federal polling being matched in those polls for control of the German capital.

  • Berlin state election poll: SPD: 22% (+4), Greens: 18% (-4), Christian Democratic Union: 16% (-2), Die Linke: 15% (+2), Alternative for Germany: 12%, Free Democrats: 9% (-1), Free Voters: 3% (+1). INSA, 16-23 August. Chgs w/16-22 June. 1,000 respondents.
  • This is the first opinion poll from INSA that shows the SPD with an outright lead in Berlin since 2016.
  • The SPD currently leads the Berlin gov't as part of a three-party left-wing coalition with the far-left Die Linke and the environmentalist Greens. Current polling would indicate that this coalition would be able to retain power following the election if it matches the final result.
