SPD, Greens, FDP Set To Start Formal Coalition Talks-RTRS

Reuters reporting ahead of the joint press conference between officials from the Social Democrats (SPD), Greens, and Free Democrats (FDP) at 1300CET (0700ET, 1200BST), that according to its sources the parties are in agreement on launching official coalition negotiations to form a three-party gov't.

  • The launch of official talks is the next step in the process of forming a gov't. These are likely to prove lengthy given the inherent difficulty of having three parties involved, and could last until the end of the year.
  • Opinion polling continues to show strong support for SPD candidate Olaf Scholz to succeed Angela Merkel as chancellor, with even a strong portion of CDU/CSU voters preferring this outcome.
