SPD's Scholz Holds Wide Lead In Personal Polling Race-REPOST

GERMANY

Bullet reposted with full title.

While party-level opinion polling shows a small narrowing in support between the SPD and CDU ahead of the 26 September federal election (see 1139BST bullet), polling for individual chancellor candidates continues to show the SPD's Olaf Scholz as the most popular candidate by a significant margin.

  • In the latest YouGov poll asking respondents 'how do you rate the political work' of canidates, 41% of respondents ranked Scholz's work as good, to just 24% saying he has done a bad job.
  • This compares to 50% of respondents stating that CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet has done a bad job, compared to just 20% saying he has done well.
  • The polling highlights the differences between party and personal support in this election. Scholz has an extremely good personal level of support, which his party has yet to catch up with. On the other hand, the CDU polls much better than Laschet, who acts as a drag on the centre-right's campaign.
  • The other poorest performers were Green chancellor candidate Annalena Baerbock and co-chair of the right-wing Alternative for Germany Alice Weidel.
  • Christian Lindner of the pro-business liberal Free Democrats was the only other political leader to get close to a net positive overall rating, with 27% saying he has done well to 29% stating he has not.
