Speaker Johnson: "Clock Is Ticking" On National Security Supplemental

US

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told reporters that he will meet with rightwing Republican House Rep Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) today to discuss her plan to trigger a vote to oust him if he moves forward with a national security supplemental package to fund Ukraine. Funds likely need to be legislated in the current two-week Congressional work period.

  • Johnson: "House members are continuing to actively discuss our options for a path forward [on the supplemental]… It's a very complicated matter at a very complicated time."
  • Johnson: "The clock is ticking on it and everyone here feels the urgency of that. What is required is that you reach consensus and that's what we're working on."
  • On Greene, Johnson says: "Here's the reality... we have the smallest majority in history... we're not going to be able to do big transformational changes... its a matter of math... A motion to vacate doesn't help us... it would be chaos in the House. So Marjorie and I are going to visit later today."
  • Johnson has an additional headache on the horizon with three Republican reps now publicly stating they will vote down the rule on renewing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) bill - enough to kill it on the floor.
  • Johnson has backed the FISA bill, while former President Donald Trump has called on the GOP to block the bill, arguing that it empowered domestic intelligence services to spy on his campaign.
