Spox-Cabinet To Agree Supplementary Budget This Afternoon

GERMANY

Wires carrying comments from a gov't spox stating that they expect the Cabinet to agree on the supplementary 2023 budget this afternoon. This would appear to present an expedited schedule compared to initial statements from Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who stated that he would present the supplementary budget to Cabinet on Wednesday 29 Nov.

  • The schedulefor the Bundestag shows Chancellor Olaf Scholz set to address the plenary session on the budget situation at 1000CET (0400ET, 0900GMT) on Tuesday 28 Nov. Members of the Bundestag will hold their first discussion on the draft law relating to a supplemental budget on Friday 1 Dec at 0900CET.
  • The situation with regards to the supplementary budget and gov't efforts tosuspend the debt brakefor another year is clearly fluid, with the administration having to scrabble to deal with the EUR60bn hole blown in the state finances by the Constitutional Court decision regarding the planned unspent-COVID-funds-for-climate-change-spending.
