Spox-Discussing AT/SE Neutrality Model For Ukraine, Could Have Own Army

Wires reporting comments from Kremlin spox Dmitri Peskov stating that a 'neutral Ukraine with its own army is a possible compromise option'.

  • Also states that discussions involve the potential for an Austria/Sweden neutrality model for Ukraine.
  • Neither Austria nor Sweden are part of NATO, but are part of the EU and therefore subject to Article 42.7 of the Lisbon Treaty, which obliges EU countries to aid a fellow member state that becomes “the victim of armed aggression on its territory” by “all the means in their power”.
  • While the seemingly positive rhetoric from the Kremlin on progress in talks could be seen as a good sign, there is still a long way to go until a ceasefire or withdrawal is reached. Putin meeting Zelensky likely to be a major step required for talks to succeed.
  • Earlier today, UK Foreign Sec Liz Truss warned of 'smoke and mirrors' in Russian talks with Ukraine. Have previously seen situations in which progress w/Moscow seemingly being made, only for a rapid about-turn made by Russia resulting in a deterioration in the political situation.
  • Kremlin: 'There will be sanctions on the leaders of unfriendly countries'. Comes in the wake of yesterday's imposition of sanctions on US President Joe Biden, top WH officials, as well as Biden's son, and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
