Stable Economy, Splintering Of Minor Parties Boosts ND Majority Chances

GREECE

With the 25 June snap general election just over a week away, PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis' centre-right New Democracy (ND) remains on course to win a comfortable majority in parliament according to opinion polling. While the Greek economy is no longer front-and-centre of eurozone investor minds unlike in previous election campaigns, the re-election of the Mitsotakis gov't is likely to support Greek assets going forward.

  • All seat projection opinion polling carried out during the snap election campaign have showed ND winning an overall majority under the reintroduced electoral system that gives a 'majority bonus' quotient of seats to the party winning the most votes.
  • The latest from Pulse RCfrom 13 June projects ND winning 163 of the 300 seats, with the far-left SYRIZA in a distant second place on 52 seats in what would be the party's worst result since 2009.
  • Macropolis highlights that infighting within minor parties could prove beneficial for ND, stating that the party "...stands to benefit from the weakening of marginal parties across the political spectrum because of a feature of the electoral system which lowers the threshold for an outright majority in proportion to the number of votes cast for parties which fail to make it into Parliament."
