State Dep't: No Final Decision On Sherman's Trip After China Snub

A US State Department official stated earlier today that no official decision had been made on whether Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman's planned trip to China would go ahead following a story stating that there was not guarantee that Beijing would grant Sherman a meeting with her counterpart if the trip were to go ahead.

  • State Dep't says that there is room in Sherman's schedule for the talks to go ahead. Official acknowledges that 'the US' relationship with China is in a challenging situation' but that 'the US is always open to engagement with China when it is substantive'.
  • Evan Medeiros, China expert at Georgetown University, stated to the FT that "China's move is a dangerous one. It increases distrust, tension, and the risk of miscalculation during an already fraught period."
