Stoltenberg In Talks w/Danish Defence Min After Nord Stream 'Sabotage'

NATO

Wires reporting that NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has been in talks with Danish Defence Minister Morten Bødskov following the apparent sabotage of the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea this week.

  • NATO states that the two discussed how to address the protection of critical infrastructure in NATO countries.
  • Bødskov states that it might take 'a week, perhaps two' before the areas around the damaged leaks are calm enough to be investigated.
  • The apparent sabotage comes as the Baltic Pipeline from Norway to Poland, and then onto Denmark, opened earlier this week (see 0920BST energy bullet), and Norway warns of rising risks to its energy infrastructure (see 0859BST energy bullet).
  • Involving NATO highlights how seriously Denmark (and Sweden, soon to be a NATO member) are taking the issue. If it is proved that a foreign actor engaged in attacks in either nations' waters it could see Article 5 collective defence clause triggered.
