Strong Payrolls Trend Boosted By Govt, Plus Less Rosy NSA Figure

  • Strong payrolls growth of 311k (cons 225k) in Feb, especially after no material downward revision to the January surge (504k vs 517k). A combined two-month revision -34k doesn’t make a dent in a 3- and 6-mth averages of 351k and 336k respectively.
  • However, surprisingly large 46k contribution from govt vs 10k expected, especially after an upward revised 118k in Jan meant that Jan private payrolls growth saw more of its gloss knocked off with a -57k downward revision (2-mth -94k). It’s still running at a 3-mth av of 294k though.
  • The total NFP NSA figure was less rosy, adding 1.11M jobs vs 1.67M in Feb’22. It comes after attention last month with the smallest net losses for a January since the 1990s.
