Sullivan: AUKUS Will Provide Requisite Capabilities For Next 50 years

White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has previewed the AUKUS submarine announcement to come after a trilateral meeting between US President Joe Biden, Australian PM Rishi Sunak, and Australian PM Anthony Albanese later today.

  • Sullivan: "What the leaders will lay out is a multiphase process that begins over the next few years... with the training of Australian sailors, engineers, technicians, and other personnel to be able to take on the responsibility and stewardship of nuclear propulsion."
  • Sullivan: "In a few years down the line, you'll start to see regular rotational deployment of US and UK subs in Australia. A few years after that... the delivery of three Virginia class subs, with the possibility of going up to five."
  • Sullivan: "The the final phase will be the deployment of a new conventionally armed nuclear powered submarine - the SSN AUKUS - built with UK hull and American technology with significant investment in all three industrial bases."
