Sunak And Albanese To Travel To US For AUKUS Announcement

SECURITY

A spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed that Sunak will travel to the US on Monday for talks with US President Joe Biden and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as the group prepares an announcement on the progress of Australia's nuclear submarine fleet.

  • Beijing claims that sharing nuclear technology with AUKUS is "a blatant act of nuclear proliferation" and, in a statement last year, said the pact is, "the first time that nuclear weapons materials are openly and directly transferred illegally from a nuclear-weapon State to a non-nuclear-weapon State."
  • Defense News reports: "[US] House [of Representatives] staffers already received an AUKUS briefing last week, but the countries are keeping a tight hold on what capabilities the trilateral agreement will entail. President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are expected to reveal details on AUKUS capabilities and technology sharing on March 13."
  • Bloomberg: "The project has taken longer than expected, with US restrictions on technology and information-sharing applying to the other Aukus members even though they are partners in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing community."
