Sunak Reshuffle; Large Number Of Ministers Ousted In Cabinet Upheaval

UK

With new PM Rishi Sunak at the Houses of Parliament engaging in his first Cabinet appointments a slew of ministers have resigned from office or been sacked. Once the outgoing ministers have been dealt with in Parliament, Sunak will travel to Downing St. to make his new gov't appointments.

  • So far the following ministers/senior party officials have resigned/been sacked: Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Jacob Rees-Mogg, Chief Whip Wendy Morton, Secretary of State for Wales Robert Buckland, Conservative Party Chairman Jake Berry, Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor Brandon Lewis, Secretary of State for Education Kit Malthouse, Secretary of State for Environment, Farming, and Rural Affairs Ranil Jayawardena, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions Chloe Smith, Minister of State for Development Vicky Ford.
  • Westminster observers are tipping current Home Secretary Grant Shapps to take over from Rees-Mogg as BEIS, with the potential for right-winger Suella Braverman to be re-appointed to the Home Office less than a week after resigning to former PM Liz Truss following a protocol breach regarding her private email account.
  • Appointment of Braverman or other figure from the right of the party such as Kemi Badenoch seen as important in maintaining party unity. However, these figures are unlikely to be put into departments with sizeable impacts on the economy such as the Treasury or BEIS, with those jobs going to Sunak-ite fiscal moderates.
