Supreme Court Rules Scottish Parliament Cannot Legislate For IndyRef2

SCOTLAND

Supreme Court President Robert Reed reads out judgement stating that the Scottish Parliament is does not have the powers to legislate for a 'consultative' referendum on independence.

  • This was seen as the most likely outcome ahead of the ruling.
  • The ruling is not a huge blow to the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP), given that expectations were low ahead of the decision. It is likely to see the SNP, which leads the Scottish gov't, escalate its campaign arguing that the UK gov't is denying democracy by not allowing a second independence referendum.
  • Ruling states that the 'practical implications' of a referendum has more than a 'loose' consequence in regards to 'reserved matters'.
