Surovikin: Difficult Decisions Cannot Be Ruled Out

RUSSIA

Russian news agency Tass has reported comments from Russian General Sergey Surovikin on the current state of Moscow's "special military operation" in Ukraine.

  • Surovikin: "The situation in the area of the special operation is tense."
  • "Russian forces are not aiming for rapid progress in Ukraine but seeking to minimise civilian casualties."
  • "Further actions regarding Kherson to depend on current military and tactical situation. It is complicated, difficult decision cannot be ruled out."
  • Surovkin's comments come as the Russian-installed administration of the annexed Kherson region announce the evacuation of civilians from the right bank of Dnipro river. Surovikin claims that the move was in response to Ukrainian plans to destroy the Kakhovka reservoir dam.
  • Surovikin was appointed commander of the Ukraine theater shortly after the attack on the Kerch bridge last week. His appointment was accompanied with a sustained barrage of missile attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, a tactic employed by Surovikin in Syria, seen as turning the tide for the Russian-back regime of Bashar al-Assad.
