Sweden NATO Talks At Pentagon Focus On Interim Security

Talks between US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin and Swedish Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist at the Pentagon today have centered around “the interim period between the application for NATO membership” according to a senior US defence official.

  • Andrew Clevenger of CQ writes: 'As Sweden and Finland have applications pending to join NATO, Pentagon is having staff-level discussions about what security assistance or assurances they might need during transition phase, says senior defense official. DOD quite familiar with both militaries already.'
  • US President Joe Biden released this statement a short time ago: “While their applications for NATO membership are being considered, the United States will work with Finland and Sweden to remain vigilant against any threats to our shared security, and to deter and confront aggression or the threat of aggression,”
  • The US State Department released this statement: 'Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg today from Washington, D.C. following the presentation of applications by Finland and Sweden to join NATO, which the United States welcomes and supports.'
