Swiss Hydro Stocks Widen Surplus to Highest Since June

ELECTRICITY

Swiss hydropower reserves rose by 1.2 percentage points last week to 88% of capacity as of 6 November, widening the surplus over the five-year average to the highest level since mid-June, BFE data showed.

  • Stocks continued to rise, despite reaching the peak levels two weeks ago in 2022 and usually peak at some point in October.
  • The surplus over the five-year average rose to 3.6 percentage points last week, up from 1.6 points the week prior.
  • Reserves also stood above the long-term average since 1997 by 1.2 points, compared with 0.9 points a week before.
  • Hydropower output was almost stable on the week. Production from reservoirs edged down by 18MW on the week to 1.52GW, while output from pumped storage stood at 1.01GW last week, down by 4MW on the week, Entso-E data showed.
  • Forecasts suggest high precipitation in Sion – in the hydro-intensive canton of Valais – for the remainder of this week. Some precipitation could fall in form of snow due to freezing temperatures, which could slightly limit inflows into reserves.
