CHINA
CHINA: The Chinese Communist Party is set to postpone its annual 'Two Sessions'
meetings due to take place in March due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
- The meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's
Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) were due to take place in Beijing from
March 5 and March 3 respectively.
- The Two Sessions are viewed as key events in the Chinese political calendar,
given that they are the sole annual meetings of what is effectively the
country's legislature.
- The postponement is likely intended to be a signal from Beijing that the
government is committed to fighting the COVID-19 outbreak, but is unlikely to
have a significant impact on policy-making in China. The Two Sessions are
largely rubber-stamp events for the approval of the Politburo Standing Committee
of the Communist Party of China, the country's highest political organisation.
