UK: To confirm, all 8 of the Brexit motions that faced indicative votes in the
Commons late Wednesday were defeated. Focus now moves to "Meaningful Vote III"
on PM May's Brexit deal, with various reports suggesting that the vote will most
likely happen on Friday. The DUP continues to oppose May's deal, with a hardcore
group of the ERG also set to vote against the deal (even with the likes of Boris
Johnson now supporting May's deal as she has reportedly promised to step aside
before the next stage of negotiations if her deal passes).
- To overcome obstacles re: bringing the deal back to the Commons for a third
time, the FT noted that May is looking at splitting "her deal in two &
presenting only one half to MPs for a vote. The PM is looking at holding a vote
only on the 585-page draft withdrawal treaty - the legally binding divorce
agreement with the EU - while spinning off the 26-page non-binding political
declaration on future relations with the bloc. The idea has been circulating in
Downing Street all week, but has been given greater urgency by Mr Bercow's
renewed warning on Wednesday that he would not accept a third meaningful vote on
substantially the same exit package that MPs have already voted down twice."
