Trade Min To Visit US 5-10 Jan To Discuss China Chip Curbs-Sankei

Japanese outlet Sankei reporting that Japanese Trade Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura will be in the US 5-10 January for discussions with officials regarding potential curbs on the export of semiconductor/microchip manufacturing equipment to China.

  • In December the White House confirmed that it had held talks with Japan as well as the Netherlands on halting the export of equipment that could allow China to develop high-tech semiconductors in an effort to slow Beijing's military advances.
  • Japan Times reportsthat industry insiders have warned that the Japanese chip sector could be hit hard if it were to join in with US efforts. “There is still some uncertainty over how the restrictions would work, but if we interpret them straightforwardly, the damage to Japan’s chip industry would be massive,” said Akihiro Morishige, a researcher at the Mitsubishi Research Institute."
