Former President Donald Trump has blasted House GOP Conference Chair Liz Cheney in a statement following his endorsement of Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) to replace her. Trump also called out his former Vice-President Mike Pence and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for failing to examine Trump's false claims of election fraud.
- Trump acolytes in the GOP have sought to oust moderate Cheney as the No.3 in the Republican hierarchy, but so far have failed to find a willing candidate to challenge the daughter of former VP Dick Cheney.
- Stefanik, who has represented New York's rural 21st congressional district since 2015, has been a staunch Trump supporter and voted to reject the certification of Pennsylvania's electoral college ballots in the wake of the 6 January Capitol riots.
- The Republican party, which harbours a strong chance of taking control of both houses of Congress in the 2022 mid-term elections, remains deeply divided over the role former President Trump should hold in the party.
