Trump Maintain Huge Lead In Race For GOP Nomination Ahead Of Second Debate

US

Seven Republican presidential hopefuls have qualified for the second GOP presidential debate taking place tomorrow at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California.

  • The candidates: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND).
  • Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson is the only candidates from the first debate to not make the stage.
  • Former President Trump will again skip the debate to counterprogramme the event with a speech in Detroit. Trump remains the clear frontrunner for the nomination. According to the 538 polling average Trump leads the field with 55.1%.
  • The New York Times notes: "For these candidates, time is running short to gain on the front-runner in the race, former President Donald J. Trump. They will need to seize on moments like debates, with national audiences, if they hope to be competitive in the early contests in Iowa and New Hampshire."
