Trump Pledges Tax Free Tips, Play For Swing-State Voters

US

Former President Donald Trump made a pitch for low-wage swing-state voters, pledging to scrap taxes on tipped earnings at a campaign event in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday.

  • Trump said, at his first rally since his Manhattan conviction: “We’re going to do that right away first thing in office because it’s been a point of contention for years… For those hotel workers and people that get tips, you’re going to be very happy. Because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on people making tips.”
  • Bloomberg notes: “Trump’s latest tax-cut pledge signaled a bid to appeal to Nevada’s booming service industry dominated by young workers and people of color, two voter groups he’s courting...”
  • Politico notes: “Congress would have to comply for Trump’s idea to become reality. That raises the prospect that tipped wages could become part of the conversation when the potential renewal of Trump’s first-term tax cuts comes up next year.”
  • Nevada is one of the Sun Belt states that Biden won in 2020 which Trump is currently commanding a strong polling lead. A Morning Consult survey in May found Trump and Biden tied in Nevada, 47% apiece, but with Trump ahead 44%-39% when independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was included on the ballot. 538’s polling average shows Trump leading 42.8% - 37.6% in Nevada.
  • According to data from Polymarket, Trump is favoured in Nevada with an implied probability of 62% of winning, compared to 36% for Biden.
