Trump Support Increases Amongst Independents In Wake Of Mar-a-Lago Search

US

Polling data from YouGov suggest that support for former President Donald Trump has increased amongst Republicans and Independents following the FBI search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.

  • The Washington Post writes that Trump was beginning to lose momentum ahead of a 2024 presidential bid, "then the Mar-a-Lago search happened, and even his detractors were suddenly aligning with him."
  • The long-term political implications of the search are difficult to quantify, especially considering the lack of information on whether the Department of Justice is pursuing a criminal prosecution, but it should be noted that a downtrend of support appears to have been reserved by the search and subsequent political backlash from the GOP.
  • Analysis of the chart shows that support amongst Independent voters had eroded following the nationally broadcast January 6 Select Committee hearings, dropping low of 33.4% recorded on the 28th June. That number has since risen to 42.3% - a significant increase.
  • The eight January 6 Commission hearings broadcast over 6 weeks between June 6 and July 21 averaged 13 million viewers. The first hearing, broadcast in prime time, recorded over 20 million viewers.
