Truss Spox-'ECJ Should Not Be Final Arbiter Of Law In Northern Ireland'

Wires carrying comments from spokesman for UK PM Liz Truss stating that 'It is our long-standing position that the European Court of Justice should not be the final arbiter of law in Northern Ireland.'

  • Says that the UK and EU are 'now moving onto official level talks on the protocol'.
  • Comes as the upper chamber of the British Parliament, the House of Lords, is set to take up the second reading of the controversial Northern Ireland protocol bill on Tuesday.
  • The gov't does not hold a majority in the Lords, and there is believed to be a concerted effort by the opposition to halt the bill - but not at this stage. Instead, The Guardian reports, "[Peers] want to keep their powder dry until the committee stage on 25 October when they can try to delay the bill indefinitely with an amendment preventing it completing its House of Lords stages until an impact assessment is produced."
