UK: Biden Tells Truss: Both Committed To Protecting Good Friday Agreement

The first formal bilateral meeting between US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minster Liz Truss is underway on the margins of the UNGA in New York. Ahead of bilat, Biden told Truss and reporters that both leaders are committed to protecting the Good Friday Agreement.

  • The meeting follows one between Truss and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen earlier today, and a meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly yesterday with Northern Ireland high on the agenda of both.
  • Beth Rigby of Sky writes: "...am told by diplomatic source that US Sec of State Antony Blinken made it very clear to Foreign Sec James Cleverly that resolving tensions over trade in NI “is a top priority for the US.”
  • In a preview of Truss/Biden meeting, US NSA Jake Sullivan stressed that Biden would discuss Northern Ireland "in some detail."
