UK flash PMIs decline

UK DATA
MNI (London)
  • UK December flash PMIs saw a drop in growth as services declined substantially with the Omicron variant hitting the UK particularly hard. All values remain above the breakeven expansion point of 50.
  • The manufacturing prelim PMI dampened as forecasted to a 3-month low of 57.6 (previous: 58.1) as UK exports fell under Brexit difficulties, however supply bottlenecks were seen easing slightly.
  • The flash services PMI dropped over five points from November’s reading, dampening to 53.2 in December (forecast: 57.0, previous: 58.5). This 10-month low was led by a strong decline in consumer-facing service activity, with travel and hospitality suffering the most as demand fell sharply due to the spread of the new covid variant.
  • Overall, the UK flash composite PMI dropped to a ten-month low of 53.2, over three points below the Bloomberg consensus (forecast: 56.3, previous: 57.6).
