UK: ITV-Some In Gov't Told Election To Be Announced, But No Date Yet
UK
ITV's Anushka Asthana posts on X: "Some folk in govt have been told an election is being announced but they weren’t told the date…"
- Speculation remains rampant in Westminster as to the prospect of PM Rishi Sunak calling a general election. If he does so, the two most likely dates are:
- A snap election to take place on 4 July.
- The announcement of a general election to take place in the autumn (14 November has been mooted by pundits).
- Cabinet is meeting at 1615BST (1115ET, 1715CET), with all ministers called in. Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron has returned from Albania at short notice, while Defence Secretary Grant Shapps' planned visit to eastern Europe has been postponed. The recalling of ministers has raised expectations of a substantial announcement to come following Cabinet.
- There remains the prospect that no election is called, with a Cabinet reshuffle another potential outcome.
