UK-Kishida, Sunak To Sign Military Mutual Access Deal Next Week

JAPAN

Japanese outlet Yomuri Shumbun reporting that as part of a whistlestop visit to the UK next week, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida and his British counterpart Rishi Sunak will sign a military Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) to enhance and smooth military cooperation between the two countries.

  • The deal will see visa requirements waived for military personnel, a relaxation of customs inspections during UK-Japan joint military drills, and bureaucratic procedures streamlined when one nation's troops are posted in the other's country.
  • The UK will be the second nation afforded an RAA, following on from an agreement between Japan and Australia.
  • Kishida set to visit five of the seven G7 members in the coming days, with visits to the US, Canada, France, Italy and the UK between 9-13 Jan.
  • The deal, combined with Kishida's announced plans to significantly ramp up Japanese military spending, displaying the shift in security alliances from a purely Western hemisphere NATO-focused outlook towards more global strategic competition.
