UK PM Spox-Intensive Negotiations On NIP Continue, Talks w/EU Later Today

EU-UK

Comments from UK PM Rishi Sunak's spox regarding ongoing talks with the EU on the Northern Ireland protocol hitting wires. Spox-UK's foreign and Northern Ireland secretaries will hold talks with EU Commission VP Sefcovic on Tuesday. Spox says PM told Cabinet ministers that 'intensive negotiations' continue on Northern Ireland protocol.

  • Spox: UK PM seeking to address three main areas: safeguarding Northern Ireland's place within the UK, protecting the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement, and ensuring the free flow of trade within the UK internal market.'
  • Spox: 'Negotiations have progressed, but still a number of unresolved issues.'
There has been thinly-veiled criticism of the talks from a former minister under PMs Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, Jacob Rees-Mogg, who said the NIP discussions are, "...quite surprising, because this is very similar to what happened with Theresa May. So a story would appear in the Times and Downing Street would say: ‘No, this isn’t quite right, it isn’t at all right’. And then a week or two would go by and it would turn out to be completely right and they would hope that people would just conveniently fall in behind the announced policy. [...] It’s important to get support for it first before you finalise the details and that doesn’t seem to have been done here."
