Free AccessUK's Johnson: Still Work To Do At COP26
UK PM Boris Johnson speaking earlier today at a presser at COP26 summit in Glasgow.
- Johnson: "My question to my fellow world leaders this afternoon... is will you help us grasp that opportunity or will you stand in the way?...We all agree with what needs to be done, we just need to get on and do it. So now is the time to come together".
- ""We are now firmly in the hard yards...negotiations are getting tough. With just a few days left, there is still a huge amount to do...We moved the ball a long way down the pitch, but we are stuck in a bit of a a rolling maul...There is no excuse, we know what is at stake now...We need to pull out all the stops. If we're going to do what we came here to do. Let's keep 1.5 alive and make Paris the success that the world needs to be...You cannot now sit on your hands as the world asks you to act... the world knows what a mess our planet is in. We know what needs to be done, we just need the courage to get on and do it. Now is the time...[World leaders should] pick up the phone and give them the space and negotiating margin they need to get this done. Here in Glasgow the world is closer than it has ever been to signaling the beginning of the end of climate change. It's now within reach at COP26"
- There remains no guarantee of a broad and comprehensive deal on mitigating climate change being reached. If a major deal can be agreed at the last minute it could have major political and economic ramifications worldwide over the coming years, but this seems unlikely at present.
