Ukraine Crisis May Inform 2022 National Security Strategy

  • The Ukraine crisis might have serious implications for the future of US foreign policy. The White House is currently delaying the release of its 2022 National Security Strategy document, required by law annually, but is being hindered by the complex geopolitical environment.
  • The present challenge for the Biden administration is how to maintain the US foreign policy strategy of pivoting to Asia in the face of a more aggressive Russia. The Trump administration and the Biden administration both recognised the need for a pivot to the East but Andrea Kendall-Taylor, former US intelligence official and Russia expert said that Ukraine crisis is ‘an important turning point in Russian-US relations.’
  • The 2021 National Security document promised to ‘…establish effective international rules and hold countries like China to account. That is why we will reaffirm, invest in, and modernize the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and our alliances with Australia, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.’
  • The specific identification of China as the primary geopolitical threat to US security and the centrality of Asia Pacific military alliances may need to be rethought in the light of recent Russia aggression. There are expectations that the 2022 NSS will include provisions to bolster the US presence in Europe and redesignate Russia as a primary threat to US interests.
