UKRAINE: EUR5bn Boost For Kyiv As European Foreign Mins Set For 19 Nov Meeting

UKRAINE

Reuters report that the foreign ministers of Poland, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, and Ukraine are set to meet in Warsaw on 19 November. Reuters: "The assembly aims to discuss pressing issues, including the re-election of Donald Trump as U.S. president, based on information provided by two anonymous sources. The agenda will also encompass significant topics, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the broader political landscape across Europe."

  • The meeting is seen as critical for coordinating European action with regards to Ukraine in the face of a major reduction in US assistance to Kyiv come January when the Trump administration takes power in Washington.
  • Within the past few hours PM Denys Shmyhal has confirmed the receipt of EUR4.1bn from the EU from its Ukraine facility and EUR1.1bn as the next tranche of Extended Fund Facility (EFF) payments from the IMF. While such funding remains important to both keeping the Ukrainian state running and funding its armed forces, the potential loss of US contributions risks a mortal blow to Ukraine's defensive efforts against Russian invasion.
  • US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on a visit to Brussels earlier in the week that the Biden administration is "committed to making sure that every dollar we have at our disposal will be pushed out the door between now and Jan. 20.”
