Unions Pressure SAA for Payouts; Eskom Pursues Tariff Changes

  • Dept of Public Enterprises warns union court case being heard by the labour court today to pay three months of deferred salaries to SAA employees could hamper the airline's business rescue process.
    • Unions also calling for a lump sum payment of an agreed 5.9% increase backdated to April 2020 and equivalent pro-rata contribution towards a 13th cheque
  • Zuma to face Constitutional Court today 0800GMT with judgement expected to compel him to face the State capture commission after walking out of the prior hearing without permission. If the judge rules against him he will be forced to face testimony from 30 witnesses accusing him of wrongdoing
  • Eskom pursuing three changes to its tariff structure including: changes to peak pricing, removing the incline block tariff structure and charging households that want to sell solar power back to the grid.
    • All remain subject to NERSA approval and are aimed and boosting profitability for the SOE to offset debt concerns, but should add upside pressure to inflation, should they be approved
  • SA's first batch of vaccines due to arrive on Monday and b followed by a quality assurance process for 10-14 days - 1.25m doses to target healthcare workers - BusinessTech
