Unions Set to Brief Public on Eskom Negotiations, Won't Entertain Below-CPI Offer

  • Unions NUM & NUMSA set to brief public on Eskom wage negotiations after they rejected Eskom's 1.5% increase offer.
    • NUM general secretary said this offer was "a joke" and would not entertain an offer below CPI (recently moved to 4.4% from 3.2%)
  • Calls grow for another ban on alcohol as risks to a third wave increase: cases rise to 3522 in the last 24hrs.
    • Alcohol bans have seen a sin tax drag of roughly R4bn since being introduced during covid
  • Public Health Association calls on govt to include a 'no fault' compensation fund in the NHI, warning that pooling health resources together opens it up to a flood of legal cases.
    • Notes all current claims against provincial health departments total R105bn if they were all to be paid out.
    • A no-fault compensation fund would be able to pay out some form of compensation to patients who may be injured during the 'care process', without having to drown the NHI in litigation.
    • A similar fund has already been established as part of the Covid-19 vaccine rollout.
