Reports of a potential coup d'état are emerging from Burkina Faso.


  • Burkina Faso has been engaged in a prolonged struggle with an Islamist insurgency in the north of the country and unconfirmed reports from the capital Ouagadougou suggest that President Roch Kaboré may have been detained by members of his own military.
  • Further unrest in Burkina Faso could put a squeeze on already high gold prices and destabilise border regions with the other two gold producers Mali, and Ghana.
  • It could also precipice a crisis of internally displaced peoples and add to the stream of people from the sahel region seeking refuge in Europe.
  • Burkina Faso is the 3rd biggest gold producer in Africa and has long had a problem with predation on the gold sector from armed militants.
