US Launches Operation to Safeguard Vessels in Red Sea

The US on Tuesday launched a multinational operation to safeguard start in the Red Sea as attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels forced major shipping companies to pause trade in the Red Sea.

  • US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain were among nations involved in the Red Sea security operation.
  • The group will conduct joint patrols in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
  • "This is an international challenge that demands collective action," Austin said in a statement, announcing the initiative as "Operation Prosperity Guardian".
  • Several tanker and container shipping companies announced in the past days to pause traffic in the Red Sea and sail instead via the Cape of Good Hope.
  • Euronav’s CEO said on Tuesday that shipping will be paused in the region until convoys by the “Operation Prosperity Guardian” will protect their vessels.
