US Power Demand Likely to Bolster Natgas Demand

US demand for power hit a preliminary hourly record high on Monday as air conditioning usage was increased due to severe hot weather, Reuters said.

  • July 15 was the hottest day of the year so far across most of the lower 48 states, averaging 82.1F (27.8C).
  • Power demand peaked at a preliminary 743,995 MW around 18:00 EDT (22:00 GMT).
  • The boosted power demand will likely spur further consumption of natural gas in the power generation mix to meet increased cooling demand.
  • Despite the warmer temperatures and hot weather alerts, grid operators have not taken more extreme actions to manage supply and demand-like calls for conservation and rotating outages.
