US Remains Opposed To "General Ceasefire" Between Israel And Hamas

SECURITY

White House National Security Council spokesperson, John Kirby, has told reporters at the White House that the US continues to oppose a general ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, but has called for additional "humanitarian pauses" similar to those which allowed the exchange of hostages in November 2023.

  • Kirby: "The way we got those 100 hostages out was through a week-long humanitarian pause... because you can't enact safe passage when people are shooting at each other."
  • Kirby says the US "clearly" supports additional "pauses in the fighting," but stresses, "we don't support a general ceasefire, which is usually put in place in the expectation that you're going to end a conflict, that its going to lead to specific negotiations, that's no change to our policy there."
