US State Department Denies Reports Of Interim Iran Nuclear Deal

SECURITY

US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller has told the press that reports of an interim nuclear deal with Iran are "completely false."

  • Miller: "We have always had the ability to deliver messages to Iran when its in the interests of the United States to do so."
  • Miller: "As we have made clear, since the beginning of this administration, the President is committed to ensure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon and we believe diplomacy is the best means to accomplish that but we have taken no option off the table."
  • Miller sidesteps a question asking if a return to the 2015 JCPOA is "still on the table", by repeating the above.
  • Today, foreign policy journalist Laura Rozen published an interview with an 'unnamed senior US official' claiming that the US and Iran have engaged recently in indirect talks "to convey 'unambiguous' warnings that Iran should not conduct weapons-grade enrichment; and to urge Iran to take steps to demonstrate that it is willing to de-escalate tensions."
  • The official told Rozen: “Separately, we have told them we are interested in a de-escalatory path. And we want to see whether they are prepared to do that.”
