US Urges Iraq to Reopen Kirkuk-Ceyhan Pipeline

The US Coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk and Senior Advisor to the President for Energy and Investment Amos Hochstein emphasized the urgency of reopening the Iraq-Turkey pipeline as soon as possible, according to a White House e-mailed statement.

  • Hochstein and McGurk met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani to discuss matters concerning US and Iraq on 20 September.
  • US took special note of Prime Minister’s efforts to strengthen nation’s energy security, including with electricity grid connections to Jordan, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia.
  • Turkey halted Iraq’s 450-470kbpd of northern oil exports through the Kirkuk-Ceyhan pipeline on 25 March after an arbitration ruling. Since then, several political and technical issues have hindered flows to resume.
