USDCAD Pulls Back From Bull Trigger Test, Macklem Later On

CANADA
  • USDCAD has pulled back ~20pips from some firm resistance at 1.3543/44 seen both yesterday and recently, with the push lower coming from an intraday lift in equity futures and crude oil pushing higher.
  • 1.3544 is seen as a bull trigger, clearance of which could open 1.3623 (Fibo retracement of Nov 1 – Dec 27 bear leg).
  • Today sees building permits for Dec (0830ET) before greater focus on BoC’s Macklem speaking before CORIM, with text at 1245ET before the speech at 1300ET. A press conference will follow at ~1410ET.
  • There has been very little major Canadian data since the Jan 24 BoC decision, just monthly GDP for Nov/Dec flash and Macklem has already touched on it in his House appearance on Feb 1 (suggests growth faster than BoC estimate but still think Q4 GDP will be weak).
