Vermont's Leahy, US' Longest Serving Senator, To Retire

US

Senator Patrick Leahy, a Democrat from Vermont, is set to stand down following the 2022 midterm elections. Leahy is the longest-serving US senator and sits as the Senate President Pro Tempore, having been first elected in 1974.

  • Leahy's resignation could see his Vermont seat become more of a contest. Previously, his widespread name recognition in the state gave him a significant incumbency bonus. While the state is solidly Democratic, the loss of such a long-serving incumbent could result in a more vigorous Republican (or independent) challenge than previously expected.
  • Leahy also serves as chair of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee. With Leahy and the ranking Republican on the committee Richard Shelby also retiring, it puts Sens. Patty Collins (D-WA) or Susan Collins (R-ME) in line to become the second female Appropriations chair.
