Von Der Leyen To Meet Victor Orban To Discuss Energy Security

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is travelling to Hungary to meet Hungarian President Victor Orban this evening in a bid to convince Budapest to end a blockade on the EU proposal to ban Russian oil.

  • The meeting comes after von der Leyen this morning promised at the EU parliament to begin a process that would reform EU voting. The reform is ostensibly designed to hasten EU decision making but has been critised by some as an attempt to strip veto rights from dissenting states like Hungary.
  • EU Commission spox: 'President von der Leyen is travelling this afternoon to Hungary to meet PM Viktor Orbán. They will discuss issues related to European security of energy supply.'
