Voters Split On Future Of Presidential Election System, Electoral College

US

A new poll from Redfield and Wilton Strategies shows a sizeable split in the US population on what method should be used to elect presidents, perhaps unsurprisingly split down political lines. Below are some of the more interesting polls with comments from the pollsters in italics.

  • Do Americans approve or disapprove of the electoral system currently used for Presidential Elections in the US?: Approve: 42%, Disapprove: 28%, Neither: 23%. A greater proportion of 2020 Trump voters (50%) than 2020 Biden voters (38%) approve.
  • Would Americans support or oppose abolishing the Electoral College?: Support: 39%, Oppose: 27%, Neither: 26%. Those who voted for Biden in 2020 (57%) are more likely than those who voted for Trump (24%) to support abolishing the Electoral College.
  • Less of a split on issues such as term limits or raising the voting age, with clear pluralities opposed:
    • Would the American public support or oppose lifting the two-term limit on Presidents?: Oppose: 46%, Support: 27%, Neither: 20%. A majority of those aged 65+ (72%) would oppose, whereas a plurality of those aged 18-24 (45%) and 25-34 (43%) would support.
    • Do Americans agree or disagree that the minimum voting age should be lowered from 18 to 16?: Disagree: 62%, Agree: 22%, Neither: 12%. A plurality (47%) of 18-to-24-year-olds agree, compared to just 5% of those aged 65 and over.
