Voters Turn Their Backs On Modi As Virus Resurges

INDIA

The counting of votes in India's five state elections went underway on Saturday. The results draw interest as a bellwether of public approval for PM Modi's handling of India's dire Covid-19 situation. Three outspoken BJP critics clung onto power in their respective states.

  • West Bengal: The main focus was on West Bengal, clearly prioritised by BJP. TMC leader Mamata Benerjee (well-known Modi critic) led the incumbent TMC to a landslide victory but lost her seat in the legislature, while BJP fared worse than predicted by virtually all pollsters. BJP's crushing defeat was a major setback to PM Modi, who last month said he expects BJP to win over 200 seats there and personally appeared at numerous rallies. Voting for two remaining constituencies has been rescheduled for May 16.

  • Kerala: The anti-Modi LDF alliance increased their majority in the Keralan legislature, becoming the state's first incumbent gov't in 40 years to win re-election. BJP lost its only seat, despite expectations that it might increase its presence in the legislature.

  • Tamil Nadu: The DMK led by Muthuvel Stalin, another Modi critic, convincingly defeated the incumbent AIADMK (members of BJP-led federal NDA alliance) in Tamil Nadu.

  • Assam: BJP returned to power in Assam, albeit with fewer seats than after the 2016 poll.
