Weakened Swedish Economic Indicator Clouds EU Sentiment Outlooks

SWEDEN
MNI (London)

SWEDEN JAN ECONOMIC TENDENCY SURVEY 82.3; DEC 85.0

  • The Swedish Economic Tendency Survey weakened by 2.7 points to 82.3 in January as manufacturing and services edged lower. The indicator remains firmly below the long-run average of 100.
  • The slump was driven by a 4.2-point decline in manufacturing sentiment, which had now declined for eight consecutive months on the back of weak order demand. Consumer confidence ticked up only marginally.
  • This data adds to a recent slew of European sentiment indexes.
  • As of yet the eurozone data has largely signalled a more shallow recession as forward-looking outlooks improve swiftly. Yet the decline in Swedish outlooks implies the picture for the EU remains less certain.
  • Italian business and consumer confidence are due at 0900 GMT and EU/EA aggregate indicators are due on Monday.
