Weekly Consumer Confidence Improvement Still Limited

CANADA DATA
  • Consumer confidence edged higher in the weekly Nanos/Bloomberg poll from 45.3 to 45.8, as better expectations (technically highest since October) offset weaker conditions (lowest this month).
  • That said, whilst the index stabilising around 45-46 this month sees it off lows of 42 late last year and all-time lows of 37 at the depths of the pandemic, it’s still only marginally higher than 2008 lows when the survey was first introduced.
  • This low level of confidence could help keep downward pressure on household consumption which was already shown to have slowed heavily with -1% annualized in Q3 when confidence fell more meaningfully below the 50 mark, albeit after a very strong 9.5% in Q2.
